When it comes to elevating a space, tile is one of those elements that does double duty. Tile is both practical and incredibly impactful. Aesthetics aside, it’s important to consider the tile material and cost to ensure it’s the right fit for your budget and how the space will be used.

At Alicia Thomasson Interiors, we’re passionate about selecting materials that marry elegance with livability. Here’s a closer look at 5 popular tile types we use in our projects—and how each one suits a room.

1. Ceramic Tile

Versatile. Cost-Effective.

Ceramic tile is a staple for good reason. Available in a wide range of colors and finishes, it’s durable, budget-friendly, and ideal for walls or lightly trafficked floors like powder rooms and laundry spaces.

Designer Tip: Ceramic tile is a great canvas for bold colors or patterned designs when you want a touch of personality without overwhelming the space.

2. Porcelain Tile

High Performance. Low Maintenance.

Porcelain tile is a designer favorite for high-traffic areas like mudrooms. It’s denser, more water-resistant than ceramic, and available in polished or matte finishes—often mimicking the look of natural stone or wood.

Best Use: Anywhere durability is non-negotiable—especially if you have kids or pets.

3. Natural Stone Tile

Organic Beauty. Elevated Texture.

From marble to limestone, travertine to slate, natural stone brings an undeniable richness and texture to the space. Each piece is unique, with veining and variation that adds depth and authenticity.

Where We Love It: Bathrooms, powder rooms, and entries where drama and timelessness go hand in hand.

Keep in Mind: Stone requires sealing and a bit more upkeep, but the results are worth it for a client who appreciates natural beauty that ages gracefully over time.

4. Zellige Tile

Old-World Charm. Artisanal Appeal.

Zellige is a handmade Moroccan tile known for its uneven surface and luminous glaze. It’s imperfect—in the best way—and adds an organic, soulful feel to backsplashes and niche walls.

Perfect For: Clients looking for character, charm, and a truly custom look.

5. Glass Tile

Light-Reflecting. Sleek.

Glass tile brings a luminous, often modern touch to any space. It’s moisture-resistant and easy to clean, making it a great option for shower walls or accent features.

Best in Small Doses: We love using it as a glossy detail for a hint of contrast.
