Dining Room - Before

We're back with Project NauticalWhimsicalCelestial and diving into the Dining Room.

The clients entertained frequently, whether that be dinners or game nights, and they wanted to utilize the space they had in the dining room as efficiently as possible. It needed to feel cozy on the every day, and also seat plenty when guests arrived.

Between the window and the light fixture, the entire room felt off center. We entertained the idea of positioning the table lengthwise so it would be centered under the light and window, but there is a hallway directly behind it, which limits how far the table could extend as it would impede traffic patterns.

After working through possibilities, we came to the conclusion that incorporating a banquette against the wall would maximize usable space while keeping the hallway open.

We balanced the room by placing the L-shaped banquette on the left hand side. We added two pendants over the table to equalize the room. Similarly, we added gallery walls on each side wall that helps separate this nook as a "room" of it's own.

The clients wanted to incorporate nautical touches, and we did this through woven fixtures, a porthole mirror, and sailing watercolor art within the frames.

Dining Room - After

Through full service design, we created a moment out of what was currently an awkward spot with a table.

But that's not all we updated in this McLean, Virginia home. Check back for the other areas of the first floor that got a makeover!
